Atmosphere
The Ranch in Hayward fills fast on Friday and Saturday nights. By 5 p.m., the parking lot is tight and the dining room hums with fish fry and prime rib energy. Glasses clink. Sizzlers hiss. Servers move quickly between closely set tables. It's a popular spot for summer tourists and locals alike. A Northwoods supper club that knows its crowd.
Old Fashioned
The Old Fashioned leans sweet but keeps enough brandy to maintain a good balance. It's a good Old Fashioned - maybe a bit weak. Its a cocktail meant for steady sipping.
Starters
The relish tray lands early on a pressed-glass plate with black ramekins set in place. Pickled vegetables, cheese spread, crackers. It's a really nice relish tray. One of the better in the state. It's not overly complicated, but it's fresh and filling with a nice mix of spreads and veggies. A very nice start to the meal.
Entrees
Walleye arrives golden on a round dinner plate, the crust evenly fried and crisp at first bite. The interior flakes clean and moist. It holds heat well. A dependable Friday choice. Buttery and crispy. Great fish.
The ribeye is beautiful. Perfect temerature. Great meaty, beefy flavor. The kitchen puts a nice sear on the steak, leaving a great balance between the carmelized exterior and tender, juicy interior. Very good.
Prime rib is nicely seasoned. Rosy and juicy. The au jus is rich and flavorful. Very drinkable.
Wild rice cakes stand out among the sides — crisp exterior, structured interior, good seasoning. A strong supporting element.
Bottom Line
The Ranch delivers a strong Friday fish fry and a classic Northwoods atmosphere that keeps Hayward locals and tourists coming back. The bar is dependable and the walleye is reliable. When everything aligns, it’s exactly what a Wisconsin supper club should feel like.
