Atmosphere
The Packing House is a lively, cool place. The Milwaukee supper club often has live bands on weekends, creating an entertaining - albeit noisey - environment. The room feels energetic but controlled. Dark wood. Low lighting.
Old Fashioned
The Old Fashioned arrives amber in a classic rocks glass. The drink is strong, but easy drinking with a nice sweet balance. The Old Fashioned is strong enough to hold up through a steak. The bar feels practiced.
Starters
French onion soup comes in a traditional crock with a deeply browned, blistered cheese cap. Break through and the broth underneath is rich and savory, onions softened but intact. Nice and hot. Rich, creamy and filling. Great soup and nicely presented.
Complimentary rye bread arrives dense and slightly sweet, with a tight crumb and firm crust. It holds butter well. The strong, anise rye is an interesting pair with the beefy french onion soup.
Entrees
Friday fish fry brings golden cod with a structured, crisp coating. The interior flakes clean and moist. Potato pancakes arrive with a crisp exterior and soft, fluffy center. Well fried. Proper contrast in texture.
Prime rib is thick-cut with a seasoned outer rim and a warm pink interior. Tender without falling apart. Juices pool lightly on the plate. It's an extremely rich and (again) works really well with the rye bread.
Ribeye shows a defined sear and accurate temperature throughout. Seasoning stays restrained. Mashed potatoes and asparagus play supporting roles without distraction.
Bottom Line
The Packing House delivers a lively supper club experience built around steaks, fish fry, and live music. The bar is reliable, the rye bread stands out, and prime rib remains a strong draw. The Packing House is a fantastic evening and one of our favorite supper clubs in the Southeast part of the state.
