Perched atop the bluffs overlooking Mirror Lake, Ishnala delivers one of Wisconsin's most memorable dining experiences. Incredible sunset views overlooking the lake enhance the supper club's classic ambieance, incredible food and well-know Ishnala Old Fashioned. The Ishnala old fashioned could be the most photographed cocktail in the state. And the food is great too: tender, juicy steaks complimentd with creamy potatos au gratin and more. Just prepare for a looong wait. But supper clubbers are in no rush. Relax and enjoy the view. Oh, and Ishnala is not open in the winter months.

Atmosphere
Navigate the winding road through the woods and the trees eventually open to a timber lodge perched above Mirror Lake. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame water and sky, and the dining room leans fully into Northwoods grandeur. Several bars anchor the space, each drawing its own cluster of guests waiting for tables or settling in for the night. As the sun lowers toward the treeline, the room glows yellow, brown and amber, much like the Ishnala Old Fashioned.

Old Fashioned
Ishnala may server more Old Fashioned per week than any restaurant in the world.  Some say they serve 100,000 or more during their open season.  Practice makes perfect.  Served in a straight-sided rocks glass, the carmel and orange flavors hit the spot as the sun fades over the lake.  Some say the signature drink is a bit watered down, but I've never had a complaint.  Great Old Fashioned.

Starters
French onion soup surprises first-timers. A handled crock arrives capped with browned cheese that stretches when pierced, revealing a broth that runs deep and savory rather than overly sweet. It holds its own alongside the steaks rather than feeling like a formality.

Scallops arrive in a ceramic bowl, each one wearing a proper golden-brown sear. Tender interiors contrast with the caramelized crust, showing disciplined heat control. These dishes feel intentional, not secondary to the entrees to come.

Entrees
The ribeye lands thick and evenly charred, its exterior showing confident browning without crossing into bitterness. Inside, the meat cuts clean with a warm pink center. It reflects a kitchen comfortable with high-volume steak execution while maintaining consistency.

Duck offers something more distinctive. Served with stuffing and layered sauces, it moves beyond traditional supper club staples. The preparation brings subtle spice and depth — the kind of dish that reveals more on the second bite than the first.

Bottom Line
Ishnala’s setting undeniable works. The approach through the woods, the panoramic lake views, and the lodge architecture create an atmosphere few Wisconsin restaurants can replicate. The no-reservation policy means wait-times can stretch (and stretch).  But plan ahead and slow down.  Enjoy your time and your company.
When the light hits the lake at dusk and the plates arrive properly executed, it delivers one of Wisconsin’s most complete supper club experiences — scenic, delicious, and consistently satisfying.
